Beginning Meditation Classes

Beginning Meditation: A Five-Week Class

We can make friends with our minds and become present to our lives through working with our breath. In meditation we discover how our conditioned minds work, and thus begin to free ourselves from painful habits of struggle and confusion. This process enables us to find the fundamental openness, ease, and compassion of our minds, as well as the ability to embrace all aspects of experience in daily life. This class is designed to help beginners establish an ongoing meditation practice, and will include meditation instruction, guided meditations, brief talks on the philosophy of practice, and question/answer. Topics will include:

  • Getting to know our minds
  • Meditation and Embodiment
  • Gentleness, Precision and Humor in practice
  • Working with thoughts and emotions

Fresh Heart: Deepening Meditation

The heart of every experience is fresh when we can embrace the present moment as it is. Meditation enables the thoughts that separate us from this reality to fall away. Using the meditation skills developed in the Beginning Meditation class, we will explore using all of our senses as the basis for meditation. In this class we will familiarize with bringing meditative awareness to more and more complex experiences, and how to begin to apply the insights of meditation to everyday life.

Each class will include guided meditation, discussion, and a talk on the topic of the evening. Suitable for beginners and beyond. Practice Instructors are also encouraged to attend.

The practice of meditation is basically a process of getting to know yourself by becoming familiar with your mind. The Buddhist view of the mind is that it’s always awake. Its nature is awareness and compassion.

Whatever meditation practices we may do, they are all intended to increase our mindfulness and awareness, strengthen our sense of inner peace, and improve our ability to deal with our emotions as well.
