Nalandabodhi’s approach is rooted in the Vajrayana tradition of Buddhism, which emphasizes that our natural state is already fully awakened, right now. This path is focused on recognizing our true nature.

Our Mission

  • Provide a complete curriculum of study, meditation, and mindful activity, based on an authentic lineage of Buddhist teachings, that is accessible and relevant to everyday life.
  • Offer a supportive environment for exploring and applying these teachings, with people who understand the challenges of creating a meaningful life in the 21st century.

  • Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche is invited to assume the spiritual direction of a Buddhist community in Vancouver, BC, Canada, which becomes his first home in North America. He lives there for several years teaching to a growing community of students. Rinpoche also travels widely during this period, responding to teaching invitations across the United States, Canada, Europe, and Australia.

  • In a living room in Louisville, Colorado, students begin gathering together to study and practice under Rinpoche's guidance. This group soon becomes the first official Nalandabodhi center.

  • Ponlop Rinpoche formally establishes Nalandabodhi as his primary teaching organization and sangha community. Nalandabodhi soon develops into an international network of Buddhist study and practice centers.

  • Under Ponlop Rinpoche's close guidance, the first informal sourcebooks for the Nalandabodhi Path of Study courses are published.

  • Ponlop Rinpoche makes Seattle the home base for his growing dharma activities, including Nalandabodhi, Nitartha International, and Nitartha Institute for Higher Buddhist Studies. Under Rinpoche's close guidance, the first sourcebooks for the Nalandabodhi Path of Meditation courses are published.

  • Khenpo Tsultrim Gyamtso Rinpoche and Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche inaugurate Nalandabodhi's new international events center: Nalanda West.

  • Ponlop Rinpoche appoints a group of his longtime students to be senior Western teachers of Nalandabodhi. He gives each of them the title "Mitra," or "spiritual friend."

  • On his historic first visit to America, His Holiness the 17th Karmapa visits and teaches at Nalanda West for the first time.

  • The first Nalandabodhi Path of Mindful Activity course is developed in 2012. With the development of these materials, Nalandabodhi offers a full range of courses, fulfilling Rinpoche's vision for an integrated path of study, meditation, and mindful activity. Nalandabodhi Centers and Study Groups are established in Europe, Asia, and Latin America.
