Benjamin Mikolaj

Deputy chief Operating Officer

Ben grew up in Texas with a Texas-sized extended family and joined the army at age 17. An Iraq War veteran, Ben settled in Colorado and became a registered nurse. He has worked in home care for children with disabilities, nursing homes, and as a charge nurse at St. Francis Medical Center in Colorado Springs. Most recently he served as secretary and personal assistant to Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche from 2015-2018.

After being honorably discharged as a conscientious objector following his tour in Iraq, Ben pursued an eclectic journey of discovery, culminating in his meeting with Rinpoche. He then became an official student in 2009. For several years Ben taught meditation at Cambio yoga, leading workshops, teaching meditation to yoga teachers-in-training, and developing a meditation teacher training program based on the four immeasurables. He also briefly served as assistant spiritual director for Rocky Mountain Insight, a Buddhist community in Colorado Springs. An active Freemason, Ben was a member of the Colorado Masonic Speakers Bureau where he gave lectures on Buddhism, meditation, and other subjects. He is a Nalandabodhi Practice Instructor and Nitartha Teacher-In-Training.

Currently residing in Seattle, Ben enjoys exploring, traveling, reading, hiking, jokes, the mysterious, BBQ, and musical theater. He is a fan of adventure, sci-fi, and horror movies. If not at Nalanda West, he can often be found running around Green Lake with his fiancée and their dog Kraken or secluded somewhere in the mountains. He is grateful for the opportunity to serve and for all of the great friends he has found along the way.
