Sal Tufano was raised in the New York suburb of Syosset on Long Island. His father emigrated from Italy as a small child; his mother was born and raised in Brooklyn. Sal attended Boston College, a Jesuit school, and graduated with a double major in economics and Western contemplative thought. He went on to earn a master’s degree in business administration from Duke University in finance and marketing. He spent the next 20 years in various finance, strategy, and management roles, mostly with PepsiCo.
Sal started reading dharma books in his mid-twenties. The seed planted then blossomed in 2014, when, groundless and jobless after a corporate reorganization, he moved to Boulder and enrolled at Naropa University. There he completed a master’s degree in religious studies in Indo-Tibetan Buddhism.
While attending Nitartha Summer Institute in 2015, Sal made a connection with Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche and the Nalandabodhi sangha. It wasn’t long before he became a formal student of Rinpoche. Sal deepened his connection to the lineage in 2017, making a pilgrimage to Kathmandu to meet Khenpo Tsültrim Gyamtso Rinpoche. Afterwards, he served as director of operations for His Holiness Karmapa’s American tour.
As chief strategy officer, Sal’s mission is to develop short and long-term strategic and operating plans. One of his focuses is the development of commercial initiatives that provide sustainable resources for the sangha, allowing it to expand its activities.
