Wins the Prestigious
Khyentse Foundation Translation\u00a0Award<\/h1>

\u00a0<\/h1>

Congratulations go to one of Nalandabodhi’s esteemed teachers, Mitra Karl Brunnh\u00f6lzl<\/a> for recently being awarded the Khyentse Foundation Prize for Outstanding Translation.\u00a0 This honor recognized Mitra Karl’s three-volume translation of\u00a0Asanga\u2019s Mah\u0101y\u0101nasa\u1e43graha\u00a0<\/em>and it’s Tibetan commentaries.\u00a0<\/p>

The goal of the Khyentse Foundation Prize is to encourage and honor excellence in translation from Pali, Sanskrit, Tibetan, and Chinese into English. Although the original text may belong to any tradition of Buddhism, the prize is awarded to a translation that ensures important works are made more accessible to the general public. There have been six previous awards by the Foundation.<\/p>

The three volumes of the translated\u00a0Mah\u0101y\u0101nasa\u1e43graha<\/em> and its commentaries, discuss virtually everything anybody might want to know about the Yog\u0101c\u0101ra School, one of the two mainstream approaches of the mah\u0101y\u0101na.\u00a0 This compendium presents a complete overview of Yog\u0101c\u0101ra, such as the nature and operation of the eight kinds of consciousnesses, the often-misunderstood notion of \u201cmind only\u201d (cittam\u0101tra), dependent origination, the cultivation of the path, and its fruition in terms of the four wisdoms, and the three bodies (k\u0101yas) of a buddha.<\/p>

The Introduction in Volume 1 gives an overview of the Mah\u0101y\u0101nasa\u1e43graha<\/em> and its Indian and Tibetan commentaries and explains two crucial elements of the Yog\u0101c\u0101ra view\u2014the \u0101laya-consciousness and the afflicted mind (kli\u1e63\u1e6damanas) in detail.\u00a0 This volume concludes with English translations of the Mah\u0101y\u0101nasa\u1e43grahaand its commentary by Vasubandhu.\u00a0<\/p>

Volume 2 contains translations of the commentary by Asvabh\u0101va and an anonymous Indian commentary on only the first chapter of the Mah\u0101y\u0101nasa\u1e43graha<\/em>. These translations are supplemented in the endnotes by excerpts from Tibetan commentaries and related passages in other Indian and Chinese Yog\u0101c\u0101ra works.\u00a0<\/p>

The Appendices in Volume 3 include several excerpts from other Indian and Chinese Yog\u0101c\u0101ra texts, as well as supplementary materials on major Yog\u0101c\u0101ra topics in the Mah\u0101y\u0101nasa\u1e43graha.<\/p>
