The prayer to Padmasambhava that we will discuss in this series of talks is known in the Nalandabodhi Sangha as “Guru Rinpoche Prayer”. It is a part of the famous collection that is called “The Prayers in Seven Chapters”. It was discovered in 1364 as a treasure text (terma) by a Kagyü Mahāmudrā practitioner named Sangpo Tragpa from Manglam. Besides the key for the “Northern Treasures,” which were found a bit later with this key by Rigdzin Gödemchen, this treasure text includes seven prayers to Padmasambhava. The complete title of this collection, which includes many profound instructions, is “The Vajra Speech of Oḍḍiyāna Guru Padmasambhava: Prayers of Nondelusion in Seven Chapters”. Among these prayers, the one we will look at in excerpts is the fourth one, the prayer that was requested by Padmasambhava’s student Namke Nyingpo. The core of this prayer consists of the supplication to realize the true nature of all appearances that have form, all sounds, and all mental events.
